39-year-old weightlifter Laurel Hubbard who is a transgender woman has won a weight lifting competition in Australia.
Hubbard managed not only to win in the over 90kg division, but ‘she’ also broke 4 records in the process.
‘She’ lifted a combined total of 268kg, 19kg more than her closest competitor, who is a natural born woman.
Given that men typically are able to lift larger weights than women, it’s seen as a gross unfairness in the competition.
“We have to follow the policy of the International Olympic Committee and the International Weightlifting Federation. They do not acknowledge in any way the gender identity of an athlete other than male or female; they’re not described as transgender,” – Garry Marshall, President Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand.
